2. Where can I buy the proper trash cans, plastic bags, and other materials?
The PUNTACANA Ecological Foundation, located in front of the PUNTACANA Hotel, sells all the necessary materials for proper management of solid wastes within your home. The materials are sold AT COST in order to facilitate this program. The Ecological Foundation does not benefit from the sale of these materials. You are welcome to purchase the materials elsewhere if you find better prices, however all homes should follow our guidelines for managing waste.
3. What are the most important things I need to know about handling solid waste in PUNTACANA Resort & Club and PUNTACANA Village?
- Always wash recyclable materials before depositing them into their appropriate receptacle.
- Always use transparent, plastic bags for separating organic waste and recyclables.
- Always tie the plastic bags before putting them into proper receptacles.
- Always leave your separated materials in front of your house on the corresponding collection days in an appropriate trash container with a cover.
- Never mix organic waste and recyclable materials. Once recyclable materials have been mixed with organic waste, they are no longer able to be recycled.
4. What type of bag should I use to store solid waste?
Always use transparent, plastic bags for separating organic waste and recyclables. Remaining garbage can be deposited in a normal trash bag. Yard waste should be stored in a reusable cloth or plastic bag. The Ecological Foundations sells all the required materials.
5. Can I just leave my waste in front of my house to be picked up any day of the week?
If your household waste is left on the street outside of the established collection schedule, it will not be picked up at all. If you continue to leave your household waste outside of the collection schedule, PUNTACANA Resort & Club Estates or PUNTACANA Village resident services will contact your home.
6. What should I do if the truck does not pick up my solid waste?
You can call the Department of Solid Waste Management at at 809 – 957 – 2714, ext. 3113 / 1808 or send an email to mtorres@puntacana.com or tsencion@puntacana.com.
7. Why don't I have to separate recyclable materials into categories such as glass, plastic bottles, cans, newspaper, etc?
Grupo PUNTACANA has a Recycling Center where recyclable materials are classified by type and organized for collection by a company that specializes in recycling. As long as materials are separated into four categories (Organic Waste, Recyclable Waste, Yard Waste, and Trash), the Department of Solid Waste Management will insure that materials are separated as needed.
8. I have a lot of cardboard boxes that I need to get rid of and they don’t fit into my transparent plastic bags. What do I do?
All cardboard boxes should be broken down and folded as much as possible and fit either into a transparent plastic bag or left out with other recyclables on the appropriate collection day. Broken down cardboard boxes are the only items that can be left outside of a proper trash receptacle if they don’t fit.
9. I just moved into my house and have a lot of cardboard boxes and materials from my television, stereo, other equipment and I don’t have space in my house to keep them until the proper collection day. What should I do?
Please call the Department of Solid Waste Management at 809 – 957 – 2714, ext. 3113 / 1808 or send an email to mtorres@puntacana.com or tsencion@puntacana.com to schedule a special pick-up.
10. What is the difference between organic waste and yard waste?
Organic waste consists of food scraps or leftover food, coffee grinds, egg shells, fruit rinds, and overripe vegetables. Yard waste is leaves, grass, clippings, coconut leaves and tree branches. These materials have different processes for converting them into useful material and are collected on separate days according to the established schedule.
11. What can be done with batteries and light bulbs and other hazardous materials such as paint cans and solvents?
Currently, the Department of Solid Waste Management does not handle hazardous solid wastes. We are looking for a solution to this problem. You can store these materials in the short term and we will provide an update once we have determined a proper way to dispose of these materials.
12. What do I do with my old refrigerator or washing machine or other appliances?
Please call the Department of Solid Waste Management at 809 – 957 – 2714, ext. 3113 / 1808 or send an email to mtorres@puntacana.com or tsencion@puntacana.com to schedule a special pick-up.
13. Where do the recyclable materials go?
All recyclable materials are brought to the PUNTACANA Recycling Center for further sorting and then collected by an authorized recycling company.
14. Why should I help Grupo PUNTACANA make money from selling my recyclable materials?
Grupo PUNTACANA makes very little money from the sale of recyclable materials. We have developed the Integrated Solid Waste Management program as part of our commitment to the natural environment, the local community, and providing high quality services to our guests and residences. By participating actively in our recycling program you are helping to reduce the amount of waste that is sent to the local landfill, helping reduce potential health problems caused by improper waste management, helping protect the local community from contamination from the landfill, and you are helping make Punta Cana a better place to live.
