Tech officials sign deal to offer tropical classroom
BLACKSBURG, Va.

Virginia Tech students may soon be able to study and tan at the same time. The New River Valley Current reports the school has negotiated an agreement with the Punta Cana (POON-tuh CAH-nuh) Ecological Foundation. The foundation manages a 600-acre reserve connected to the exclusive Punta Cana Resort and Club in the Dominican Republic.

There, students will be able to conduct research in such areas as tropical ecosystems and fisheries science. University officials eventually want to run professional certification programs in hospitality and tourism management at the resort.

John Dooley -- Tech's vice provost for outreach and international affairs -- says it's more than fun in the sun. He says ... quote ... "We're NOT sending students to a four-star resort."
