Dominican resort Punta Cana’s organic projects use earthworms, bees

Santo Domingo.- The Punta Cana Ecological Foundation launched the organic project "Lombricompost," which converts solid waste into high quality organic soil, and becomes the tourism industry’s first destination to use widely the environmental conservation technique.
In its first stage the project will process from 200 to 500 pounds of organic waste monthly, said Punta Cana Group environmental director Jake Kheel, adding that it’s the first time that type of earthworm is brought to the country, to be used in this type of project, under the advice of the expert Rafael Tavarez.
The Foundation is also working with bee farms to take advantage of the bees’ capacity to pollinate local plants, with a goal of producing 100 percent natural honey for sale to the public.For the bee farms the Foundation’s adviser is the prominent Altagracia Province (east) beekeeper Pedro Castillo.
Kheel said the projects’ objective is to use mechanisms easy to implement in the hotels, under environmentally sustainable management.
