While Punta Cana is not traditionally a center for agriculture, the PUNTACANA Ecological Foundation has undertaken a pilot project in sustainable agriculture since 2003. Using compost created with organic waste from throughout the Grupo PUNTACANA complex, PCEF has a test plot of 95 planters that produce arugula, lettuce, chives, peppers, basil, cilantro, and other herbs and spices. Vegetable products are sold to local restaurants, residents of the Punta Cana community, and the PUNTACANA Resort & Club.
PCEF also manages a Fruit Tree Garden that exhibits diverse tropical fruits such as Guayaba, Cereza, Quenepa (Limoncillo), Guanabana, Papaya, and Nispero. The Fruit Tree Garden is open to the public.
