While Punta Cana is not traditionally a center for agriculture, the PUNTACANA Ecological Foundation has been actively involved in sustainable agriculture since 1994, when it created the Fruit Tree Garden. Since then, we have pioneered a Worm composting facility that converts tons of organic waste from the resorts’ kitchens and gardens into high quality, organic fertilizers and soils, that are then used to grow vegetables in our Vegetable Nursery.
In 2007, the Foundation initiated a small-scale Beekeeping operation in response to growing complaints about bee colonies becoming established in homes and buildings around the resort. The Foundation took what was a “pest” and converted it into a product, honey. Since then, our beekeeping has grown to a small business that produces hundreds of gallons of honey a year as well as other natural products.
